  17. <p>     In search of evidence that cigarette smoking is not dangerous,
  18. the industry-sponsored Council for Tobacco Research spends $18
  19. million a year to bankroll studies by prominent scientists. But
  20. a new poll, published in the American Journal of Public Health,
  21. shows that 93% of the tobacco-funded scientists surveyed
  22. "strongly believe" that most lung-cancer deaths are caused by
  23. smoking. The industry's response is that it sponsors studies
  24. without regard to results. But the survey taker, K. Michael
  25. Cummings of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo,
  26. demurs: "Scientists receiving support from the council should
  27. ask themselves whether the value of their research outweighs its
  28. contribution to an industry that kills 400,000 Americans a
  29. year."
